            FAQs
Where is your facility located?
Our facility is located just minutes south of Perth, in North Elmsley Township. If you need directions to our facility, call Alan J. Hughes Custom Sawmilling at (613) 267-4565.

What sizes and varieties of logs can you mill?
We are able to work with a variety of tree species, ranging from hardwoods such as oak and cherry to softwoods such as pine and cedar. Our current sawmill can accommodate logs up to 20 feet in length and 30 inches in diameter.
How much will it cost to mill my logs?
The cost of milling your logs largely depends on the quantity and size of your logs. A recognized industry hourly fee will be applied during the hours in which the mill is operating as well as during the initial set-up. Costs expended to reach your job-site, including fuel costs, will also be included in your final bill.
Alan J. Hughes Custom Sawmilling welcomes your assistance during your saw-job. Many customers find that participating in the milling process is both enjoyable and rewarding. Part-time help can also be provided by us to bring larger jobs to completion in a timely manner.
Before milling begins, we suggest that you carefully evaluate the quality and integrity of your logs, as the milling of rotten or damaged logs is usually not a cost-effective process for you, our valued customer.
For more specific information regarding the cost of your job, please contact Alan at Info@AlanHughes.ca or call (613) 267-4565.
How far will you travel with your portable mill?
This is something that we can work out over the phone. Typically, we work within a 1-hour radius of Perth, however, exceptions can be made.
Saw-jobs in Perth, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, Lanark, Almonte and other locations throughout Lanark, Leeds and Grenville counties are easily serviced. We are also happy to travel to Ottawa, Kingston and surrounding areas for saw-jobs. All customers, regardless of distance, are invited to transport their own logs to our Perth facility for milling.
How many board feet can you produce in a single day?
Depending on tree species, length, and the diameter of your logs, our portable mill can produce 1000 to 2000 board feet per standard eight-hour work day.
What projects do customers typically use their lumber for?
Customers often use their lumber for house siding, flooring, support beams, decking, fencing, or special woodworking projects. These are just a sample of the many projects to which your lumber can be applied.
What is your availability?
